MARCH BOOK OF THE MONTH

The Age of American Unreason
By Susan Jacoby
From the Publisher: Combining historical analysis with contemporary
observation, Susan Jacoby dissects a new American cultural phenomenon--one
that is at odds with our heritage of Enlightenment reason and with modern,
secular knowledge and science. With mordant wit, she surveys an anti-rationalist
landscape extending from pop culture to a pseudo-intellectual universe of "junk
thought." Disdain for logic and evidence defines a pervasive malaise fostered by
the mass media, triumphalist religious fundamentalism, mediocre public
education, a dearth of fair-minded public intellectuals on the right and the left,
and, above all, a lazy and credulous public.
At this critical political juncture, nothing could be more important than
recognizing the "overarching crisis of memory and knowledge" described in this
impassioned, tough-minded book, which challenges Americans to face the painful
truth about what the flight from reason has cost us as individuals and as a nation.

REGIONAL NEWS

Retreat at Artemis House
During February, I spent some time at Artemis House in Greenville, NC. I spent
four days on retreat, during which I ate well, slept well and spent a great deal of
time meditating in La Chapelle de la Madeleine. Elaine Franzetti was a kind and
thoughtful hostess during my stay. The accommodations were comfortable. The
meals were delicious. While that was all wonderful, the reason I went to
Greenville was to spend time in La Chapelle de la Madeleine. The temple is an
amazing place. When you walk through the door, you can feel the power. You
know you are on sacred ground. Spending time in the temple, spending time
with the Mother in that place, in that energy was an amazing experience. I invite
you to take advantage of the opportunity to go on retreat in Greenville. I cannot
recommend the experience of retreat at the temple highly enough. There are no
words.

Tradition members to complete Le Sentier Cathares in the Languedoc in the
Autumn of 2008. More details will be available in upcoming newsletters.
News from the Carolinas:
The second Laconneau of the Carolinas weekend was held in February. The
weekend included discussion of material from Laconneau classes, a discussion of
the book, The End of America, by Naomi Wolfe and a viewing of the movie,
Peaceful Warrior. If you have not participated in one of these weekends, please
plan to do so in the near future. Women from all circles are invited to
participate.
A meditation was held in the Triangle area for the first time on Sunday February
3rd. Meditations are planned on a monthly basis in the Raleigh, Durham and
Chapel Hill areas. Please check the website for future events in the Triangle area.
Thanks to Linda Dodds, the Asheville area is creating a new circle. A Magdalene
Seminar is planned for Friday evening, March 7 and all day Saturday, March 8 in
Black Mountain, NC. Please check the website for further information. If you
cannot attend this seminar, another Magdalene seminar will be held in the area
on Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17, 2008. Also on that weekend, a Level 1
class will be held on Sunday, May 18th. If you are interested, please contact Elaine Franzetti.
Please contact Elaine for further information: Greenville@laconneau.org
Georgia News:
The Georgia circle will be hosting a Level I class in Gainesville, GA. There are
meditations planned in Decatur, Gainesville and Marietta during the month of
March.
Pennsylvania News:
In February, the Philadelphia circle hosted a wonderful Level I class. It is exciting
for the Philadelphia circle to continue to build and grow to encompass a diverse
group of women who challenge themselves and each other.
Washington, DC News:
The Washington, DC circle will be hosting an Intergenerational weekend on
Saturday, March 15 and Sunday, March 16. The focus of the weekend is the
inspirational young heroine, Joan of Arc. On Saturday morning, there will be a
trip to see the Joan of Arc triptych in a room containing images of the Divine
Feminine at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Then, there will be a visit
to the Joan of Arc statue in Meridien Hill Park, which is a copy of the figure by
Paul Dubois at Reims Cathedral. That afternoon there will be a screening of the
Joan of Arc film starring Ingrid Bergman. In the evening, a medieval dinner with
music of the period will be held.
On Sunday morning, a meditation will be followed by brunch and a debate on the
nature of intergenerational conflict: if there is a conflict, is it really one of age or
merely one of culture?
All activities will be free of charge, except the medieval dinner, which is $10 and
the brunch, which is $5. The Washington, DC Circle would like to invite all
Laconneau sisters to attend.
