Esclarmonde de Foix: “The Fox of Foix”

The  eleventh century was a time of great unrest among the nations of Europe:  their world was changing and had being doing so for over two hundred years.  Religious turmoil had become rife throughout the continent beginning in 1068  with the first crusade as prelates, princes, lords, the younger sons of the  minor nobility, and riff-raff of the emerging towns banded together upon the  orders and authority of the pope and his “Holy Mother Church” to recover the  Holy Land from the hands of “unbelievers.” All were persuaded to “take the  cross” in this “worthy” cause, the real meaning of which was that each man  was free with papal blessing to seek his fortune without regard to morality  or rule of law -- with salvation and remission of sins thrown in on the  side! After a bloody and quite unremarkable campaign the crusaders had  eventually managed to capture Jerusalem. Not, however, without the  clerically inspired slaughter of every man, woman and child within its  walls. The pope was ecstatic, the Christian world rejoiced, and everyone was  content that God’s justice had been done. Everyone, that is, except the  unfortunate Saracens who had been on the receiving end of this first example  of papal expansionism. Revolt and rebellion became the norm as the crusaders  found their new kingdom under constant threat by the avenging Saracens.

Although the crusades may have served a more practical purpose by finding an  outlet for the aggression and avarice of its participants, the finances of  the kings of France and England were bled dry through these expeditions, as  were those of the pope. Christendom was threatened from within and...

UPCOMING PILGRIMAGE

Warrior, Leader, Mystic, Saint:
Images of the Divine Feminine
September 25 - October 4
, 2007

For further details:
http://www.laconneau.com/Pilgrimages.html

Join us this autumn as we journey together through the timeless beauty of ancient France, on a pilgrimage in search of the powerful hidden images of the Divine Feminine. Walk with us as we rediscover the truth behind the symbols that have survived centuries of persecution to emerge now at the advent of the new millennium.

Our journey will focus upon two historical female figures whose lives represented all of the values that we as women have come to recognize as being essential to the future survival of this troubled world. Mary Magdalene and Jehanne D’Arc, in times of great struggle and adversity, demonstrated a brand of courage, power and determination that marks them in time and space as perfect role models for the modern woman who seeks to rediscover the lost power of the Divine Feminine, and by so doing discover both her power and her true self.

UPCOMING SEMINAR

Warrior, Leader, Mystic, Saint:
The Joan of Arc Seminar

Saturday, June 23, 2007 10:00AM-4:00PM

Artemis House
Greenville, NC

“Quand j’eus l’age de treize ans, jai une voix de Dieux... Le premiere fois, j’eus grand peur. J’entendis la voix du cote droit, vers l’eglise. Et rarement je l’entends sans clarte… Elle m’a appris a me bien diriger, a frequenter l’eglise. Elle m’a dit qu’il fallait que moi, Jeanne, je vienne en France... When I was about 13 years old, I heard a voice from God…. The first time, I was terrified… I heard the voice on my right hand, towards the church. And it is seldom that I hear it without a great light all about…….It taught me to behave rightly and to go often to church. It said that I, Jehanne, would have to go into France.” Jehanne d’Arc to her judges. Rouen – March, 1431.

Who was this fifteenth century teenage heroine and prophetess, who raised an army, liberated France, crowned her king under her curious battle standard bearing the names “Ihesus Maria”, only then, abandoned by the same king, to be condemned as a heretic in a farcical ecclesiastical court and to die in the flames of the stake, upon the orders of the Roman church and its Inquisition? The same church that hypocritically “canonized” its victim as a Catholic saint six hundred years later.

In this seminar we will explore the extraordinary career of the young female warrior saint who dared to cry “Freedom” in a world made dark and terrible by war, greed, corruption, and tyranny.  Why was the church so utterly determined to destroy her that it was prepared to murder her under the guise of judicial process?  Who was she? This mysterious seventeen-year old peasant girl who changed the course of world history in two short years, and left a legacy that has come to represent the archetypal image of female heroism, honor, and the dignity of the human spirit.

Lunch will be provided for all prepaid participants.

Seminar fee: $75.00 (Lunch is included)

REGIONAL NEWS

Georgia News:
The Georgia is hosting a benefit yard sale during the middle of June to help raise money for the new Chapelle de la Madeleine in Greenville.  It is our hope to raise a substantial donation to support our new space which is intended for spiritual retreat and festivals. If you would like to contribute items or help with our efforts, please contact Georgia@Laconneau.org.

News from the Carolinas:
As Laconneau continues to expand, we have designed a new state structure to include the new circles. One weekend a month, Laconneau of the Carolinas will combine a book discussion, film screening, time for meditation, Circle, reflection and political planning from Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon.  In this way people from other Carolina Circles can come and participate, and they will have a new opportunity to connect with their Sisters in the Carolinas. As always, Sisters from other circles are welcome to attend.

Western North Carolina News:
Linda has recently moved to the western part of North Carolina.  Several women from the Laconneau community mentioned that they know women in the Ashville area that would be interested in attending Laconneau classes and gatherings, and Linda would appreciate any referrals for her newly forming circle.

Washington, DC News:
On Saturday, June 2 from 9:00AM-5:00PM, the Washington, DC Circle is holding a Designer Yard Sale - From Tchotchkes to Treasures. All proceeds will go towards our new Chapelle de la Madeleine in Greenville. The ideal location at 6500 Wisconsin Avenue, one block south of Bradley Boulevard, is generously offered by Simon Fitall, Janet Cam's partner. Donations include items from the estate of a wealthy Washington widow, new designer handbags and clothes, gently used items, books and more. If you have anything you would like to donate, please contact dc@laconneau.org.  All those in the Washington area, please come with family and friends.
