AUGUST FILM OF THE MONTH

Gandhi
Sir Richard Attenborough's 1982 multiple-Oscar winner (including Best Picture,
Best Director, and Best Actor for Ben Kingsley) is an engrossing, reverential look
at the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi, who introduced the doctrine of nonviolent
resistance to the colonized people of India and who ultimately gained the nation
its independence. Kingsley is magnificent as Gandhi as he changes over the
course of the three-hour film from an insignificant lawyer to an international
leader and symbol. Strong on history (the historic division between India and
Pakistan, still a huge problem today, can be seen in its formative stages here) as
well as character and ideas, this is a fine film. ~Tom Keogh

LACONNEAU AUTUMN FESTIVAL

Laconneau Autumn Festival
Friday, October 31 - Sunday, November 2, 2008
Artemis House, Greenville, NC

The Laconneau Autumn Festival is a rich and deeply meaningful time. It is a time
for remembering our history, which extends from the dimly lit shadows of the
early Christian era through the difficult and dangerous medieval centuries to this
modern age. Through this festival, we celebrate the One we serve as well as all
those women of courage, our sisters throughout the ages, whose courage and self-
sacrifice have allowed us to participate in this rich inheritance. We remember
them not in sorrow but in joy, for this is the time of the inward journey, the giving
up of the old life in the sure knowledge of rebirth.
In full awareness of the disturbing changes that are taking place on a daily basis
in the world around us, never in recent memory has there been a time when it has
been more vitally important for strong women everywhere to join together in an
attempt to find a real solution which truly reflects women’s values, and their
aspirations for the future.

This year, we will continue to hold the Autumn Festival in the old way and in full
accord with the principles of our Tradition. Come join us in Greenville, North
Carolina for this wonderful weekend of comradeship, discussion, feminine
spirituality and festivities. Lend your voice to the power and love of sisters such
as yourself who feel a burning need to see change in this troubled world.

contact your local Laconneau coordinator.

Laconneau would like to express appreciation to Linda Dodds for her
generous contribution of $30 to the scholarship fund during the past
month. Thank you for helping to make it possible for more women to
attend Laconneau classes.

If you would like to make a donation to the scholarship fund, please make your
check out to Nancy Van Cleave and send it to P.O. Box 261 Kingston, NJ 08528.
If you have questions, email Nancy at nancy@laconneau.org.

France News:
Laconneau is planning to offer a limited opportunity for a small group of
Tradition members to complete Le Sentier Cathares in the Languedoc in the
Autumn of 2008. More details will be available in upcoming newsletters.

News from the Carolinas:
The next Laconneau of the Carolinas weekend will be held from Saturday, August
30 through Sunday, August 31 in Greenville, N.C. Included in the weekend will be
a book review of The Crucifixion of Mary Magdalene, by Richard J. Hooper and
a viewing and discussion of the movie, Secrets of Mary Magdalene. A Women's
Circle will be held on Saturday, August 30 at 9:00 PM. There will be time for
meditation and reflection during the weekend. It will be a time for sisters to get
together for community. Sisters from all circles are welcome.

The Greenville circle hosted a dinner for young women on June 6th. The dinner
was a success; there are now two more dinners scheduled: one on Friday, July
25th, and the next on Saturday, August 23rd. For more information, contact Elaine
at Greenville@laconneau.org.

Pennsylvania News:
As women in the classes learn and use the tools that build a strong foundation
within their own hearts, we, in turn, are able to continue building a strong
foundation for the community in Philadelphia. And as we come together for
women’s circles, dinners, meditations, and film screenings, we begin to see and
use the feminine strength within ourselves.

Washington, DC News:
The Washington DC Circle will host the Level III Course in August. The course
includes an intensive study of the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of the
Beloved Companion, as well as a study of Catharism and its relation to
Laconneau, with attention to similarities in the beliefs and teachings of the two
Traditions. Students who have completed the Level II Course are welcome to
attend. This promises to be an enriching and enlightening experience. We
encourage those who have not yet registered to do so by contacting Lorely at
dc@laconneau.org.
